Attention Squidge Artists and Authors

It has come to my attention that some artists and authors, through another site (the AO3), have been utilizing sites like Patreon, GoFundMe, and the like to take money for fanfction and fanart.  What these people are doing completely invalidates the Fair Use doctrine that we rely on for the ability to play with a universe's characters in our own playgrounds.  It has been shown that the doctrine of Fair Use covers us when we create realms, character pairings, new worlds, etc for a fandom.  You are free to do this, as long as what you are doing is for non-commercial use. However, taking money for the act of creating fanworks is completely out of bounds and will not be tolerated at Squidge.org or any affiliates.

What is allowed:
  • Creating fanfiction for personal use, sharing it on squidge.org or an affiliate site
  • Creating fanart for personal use, sharing it on squidge.org or an affiliate site
  • In either your profile on a shared site, or on your personal page/space, offering fanart for sale, as long as the sale covers the cost you incurred.  You cannot profit off of it, within reason.  If a print costs you $5.75 and mailing costs $2.00, then charging $8 is appropriate.  But charging $20 or more is not.
  • In either your profile on a shared site, or on your personal page/space, calling for submissions and offering for sale Fanzines.  Fanzines are designed to share stories, not for profit.
  • Hosting a non-profit fundraising event for the sole purpose of raising money for a specific function like our Help Japan auction a few years ago, or as a surprise to help fun raise events for people in extenuating circumstances.
What is NOT allowed
  • Putting a statement in your personal profile on a shared site, or on your personal page/space, that you are taking money for the creation of fanworks.
  • Having a link to Patreon, Gofundme, etc for the express use of raising money for the act of creating fanworks.
  • Anything else not covered that would allow a person to use Squidge.org or its resources for the act of raising money solely for their own benefit.

Site slowness

If you have been on any Squidge.org hosted site in the last few days, you may have noticed a slowdown. This is because, besides the dozens of hackers trying to get into the database, Yahoo! and Bing have somehow decided to attack us with hundreds of requests every second. I've put in code to slow them down, but they're ignoring it for now. Hopefully their furious indexing will stop soon.

New to Squidge - https Everywhere!

New to Squidge.org - SSL Everywhere!

Over the next few days, you may have your web browsing session interrupted slightly. I am installing SSL certificates for every domain that is hosted on Squidge.org, which is quite a few in number. Now anytime you go to a website hosted on Squidge.org without the secure "https://" prefix, your browser should be redirected to the secure session instead.

Doing this means that we have to move configuration files around, causing us to have to cycle the webserver twice per domain group. This is going to be a bit frustrating, and I'll apologize in advance. But we need to have https everywhere for everyone's web surfing safety!

Questions? Let me know!

WE'RE BACK!

WE'RE BACK, as of 19:45 Pacific time, 1/12/17.

We came up with a bit of an unorthodox solution to be able to get everything back up.  The big issue was power to the ONT, the network point between my ISP and the server farm.  We solved that tonight, and we're back up!

Outage Update

Here's what's going on.

Our server farm is located in our home, specifically in a loft in the detached garage.  As it's a separate building, it has its own power, which is fed from a powerline from the house.

This winter has been more brutal than most, and the powerline to the garage (which is original to the dwelling) has frayed with the influx of ice.  This fraying has caused the line to short out.  This is why the power is out, and Squidge.org is down.

An electrician was able to come out last night on an emergency call (electricians are about 30 days out where we are, due to weather).  He diagnosed the issue, and said that he was going to have to replace the line between the house and the garage.  He was going to expedite it; someone is supposed to come out today - but that doesn't necessarily mean that the job will be completed today.  I'm hoping it will be, but I'm not holding my breath.

More updates as I get them.  Think good thoughts for them to complete the work today and that we can come up later on - hopefully that will happen.

Extended downtime - Update

There were a few pressing issues that caused the outage we're in right now; this is what's going on.

First, there was intermittent Internet outages due to our ISP.  Then, our mini "datacenter" (which in reality is a loft in our garage) started having power fluctuation issues.  The circuit breaker to the garage blew for some unknown reason, and stayed on for a short period of time.

During that time, it was found that the power issues caused the firewall server to go kaput; so the firewall machine is dead.  It will not boot at all, so I took it out of service and started installing on another machine as a backup.

Then the circuit breaker tripped a few more times.  After doing research, it seems that there is a short somewhere in the wiring, so the system is shutting itself off - which means no power to the garage, and thus, no power to the servers.

So an eletrician is being contacted to come out and figure out what's going on.  They'll have to fix whatever the issue is, and then we'll be able to restore service.  Hopefully that will be in the next 24 hours.  Then once completed, we'll run without a firewall until a new one is put into place.

My apologies for this unforseen issue; we've been running in this space for 12 years now with no real power issues (besides the occasional outage) so I know this is disconcerting.  More updates as I get them.

Due to unforseen circumstances, the main server AND the failsafe are both down. We are in an extended downtime at the moment.  There is no ETA at the moment.

Down as of 10/12/2016 06am PST

We are down at the moment!

Appears that the main server went down sometime overnight on October 12th.  I'm doing what I can to remedy the situation.

Intermittent Network Issues

It appears our ISP is having intermittent network issues every hour or so.  If a page doesn't load, wait about 30 seconds and then try again.

Final NCISFiction.com update

I ran one final update today that should have reset the dates stories were created and the dates they were updated, and they should reflect what was found over on the old archive.  So if you're looking for something you know was created in 2009, the original date is back on the story.
Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to become an admin, please let me know.  There's really nothing much to do, but it's better to have more than one admin than not.  You can contact me at walterh@squidge.org or on our Facebook page at facebook.com/Squidge.org or just leave a message on here.

NCISFiction work is complete - again

So in the original import from the old software to the new, there were about 2,000 stories that didn't import properly.  After deleting the orphaned stories, I was able to reimport about 80% of the stories with the correct details.  Now there are only 7 stories without authors, and another ~300 that could not be imported due to errors.

If you find any stories of yours that are missing, and they are not part of the abandoned fic listing, please reupload them.  And again, if you haven't logged in since the cutover, you will need to request a new password.

NCISFiction update

So after the hacking event, I put NCISFiction.com on lockdown, changing everyone's passwords and locking down the site to read-only while I converted to a new, more secure software package.  The work for that is complete, and all access has been restored.

NCISFiction.com (as well as mirrored domains NCISFiction.net and NCISFiction.org) is now up on a software package called eFiction.  I managed to import all users (except spam users), all stories, and all comments.  You can head over to NCISFiction.com and you should see the archive in a slightly different format, but everything should still be available.

An email is going out now to all users saying that you need to change your password.  If you need assistance, don't hesitate to ping me on here, on Facebook.com/Squidge.org or on Twitter @squidgeorg

Thank you!

Important NCISFiction Alert!

PLEASE NOTE!  I have been alerted that people who have NCISFiction.com/NCISFiction.net accounts have had their usernames and passwords stolen by hackers!  The hackers were able to gain access to the NCIS database, containing email, usernames, and passwords.  We are working to mitigate the issue, and everyone's password has currently been expired.  If you intend on using NCISFiction.com or NCISFiction.net, you will need to change your password.

Additionally, if you use the same email address and password for other services, you should change your password on those sites as well.

Downtime today!

We are getting a speed upgrade today, so we will be going down soon (~10am) until they bring us back online - about an hour.
