Crossposting from SquidgeWorld News:

If you've ever wondered how you can give back to fandom and have a few hours per week to spare, SquidgeWorld wants you!

Currently there are a bunch of items that existed over on Peja's Wonderful World of Makebelieve outside of the automated archive, as these "static" stories were never added to Peja's WWOMB and thus are not in SquidgeWorld. The thing is, these stories are hit and miss; I checked half a dozen and only one was missing. However, because my job responsibilities (I'm working 50+ hours/week currently) I'm unable to get this investigation and archive done myself. I currently have it as a to-do item, but may not get to it for a while.

This is where you come in!

If you're interested in being an archivist, which would involve adding these missing fics into the SquidgeWorld Archive, please let me know! I'd love to have any help offered. You can comment here, or click on the Technical Support and Feedback link at the bottom of any SquidgeWorld page and send me an email.

So on New Year's Eve 2021, I did a kind of "year in review" for what people who were logged in read in the SquidgeWorld Archive.  If you're interested, the data is here in a Twitter thread, and it covers fandoms, relationships, characters, and tags of every story that was read by a logged-in user for 2021.

Someone responded and asked what the overall archive was weighted when it came to tags, because in the "freeform" tags (those are the ones like "Established Couple" or "First TIme" that you add to your works when archiving them) Angst was amost 1,500 reads higher than the next highest tag, AU.  Well today I ran that query, and yes.  SquidgeWorld is definitely weighted to be angsty!

I love data, so when my love of fandom collides with my love of data I've definitely got a smile on my face.

There's still time to enter the SquidgeWorld year end giveaway! All you have to do is guess the number of published words found in the archive since the inception of the archive (some stories go back to 1999!) and November 30th, 2021. To give people a hint, that number is between 200,000,000 and 250,000,000 - so think of a number between those two values, enter it in the entry form, and then if you're closest you'll win a $50 gift card!

Details for the contest are here: https://www.squidgeworld.org/admin_posts/35

The entry form can be found here: https://form.jotform.com/213354852505050

That's right, Squidgeworld is running a contest! Guess the number of published words in all works on the archive correctly and win a $50 gift card. All of the details can be found here:

So you know how you get so hyper-focused on one thing that you miss the REAL thing?

All along I've been thinking the culprit with the hardware failures was the M2 SSD that I've been having problems with, and so after testing and such, I replaced it. We were golden.  But then last night we started having SSD failures again - and I was like, "Wait, I just replaced that SSD."

Turns out I was looking at the M2 SSD when it appears the real culprit is the 2.5" SSD.

I know this is probably gibberish to some people, but basically I was looking at one thing when I should have been looking at another.  I'm working on bringing the system back up now.

edit 4pm: SquidgeWorld is back up and running!  I've got this reinstalling and provisioning down to a science!

UGH

SquidgeWorld is down yet again. No ETA at the moment.
squidgestatus: (Default)
I think we're up and stable.  Get in there and prove me right, folks! :D

Thanks to everyone for putting up with the last four maddening days!
squidgestatus: (Default)
By the time this gets published, SquidgeWorld.org will be back up!  There will be a post-mortem in the news section of the website when it's up.

::sigh::  What a long four days it's been.

Lord have mercy.

There were a lot of things that went down, but I'm finally past the hurdle.  I have the skeleton of SquidgeWorld up and running again, but it's now got AO3's images, name, etc everywhere because in a bunch of places it's hard-coded in the actual code.  So I've got to get that cleaned up, plus set up certificates, etc.  And once that's done, we'll be back and running.

I'll post here and Squidge's Twitter account.   Most likely it'll be tomorrow morning as I have bill-paying work that I have been putting off to resolve this, so that's gotta come first now.

So if all goes well, we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving with SquidgeWorld back up!

We lost an SSD, and the disk clone didn't take.  I fought with a process called "elasticsearch" for the last 20 hours, and gave up to reinstall again.  Now there's other Ruby errors.

We're still in a hard downtime for SquidgeWorld.  I have no ETA.
squidgestatus: (Default)
Routine maintenance this morning didn't go well for SquidgeWorld, so I'm replacing a disk drive that runs the base OS.  No ETA, but I will post when SquidgeWorld is back up!
squidgestatus: (Default)
Looks like I lost an SSD on SquidgeWorld, so I'm trying to get things back up again on a new disk. No ETA.

edit: We are back after a couple of hours.

Not like I don't have 1,000 other things to do, but...

If you've been in fandom for any time (for me, it started in 1992) you'll know that before there were archives, there were unofficial archives that were passed from person to person.  For Sports Night, that was the "zip file" that we posted and hosted from time to time.  The Sports Night zip file contained fics that, for the most part, have never been archived anywhere.

I'm a maintainer over at DW and LJ's [livejournal.com profile] snarchive and we ran into an issue with the archived zip file last summer.  It took Box.com's customer service a while to recover the file for us (and even then, we had to convince them that this was a part of fandom history and had to be saved for posterity), and it got me thinking.  So, as an archivist/owner at SquidgeWorld Archive, and as a maintainer of the Sports Night community, I decided to save the individual stories to SquidgeWorld.  So over the next couple of weeks, the 105 stories from the Sports Night zip file archive will be imported into SquidgeWorld.org

If you're interested in these stories, you can find them on SquidgeWorld in the collection "The Sports Night ZIP File Collection."

Questions?  Ping me.  And if there are other of these at-risk standalone archives like the ZIP file, please contact me to see if we can get them saved as well.

Hardware issue just reared its head. Working on it!

Update: After 2.25 hours, we are back up!  We had a hardware failure, and the server we're on has been replaced. The system may be a bit slower than previous as this server is not as powerful, but at least we're up.

Based on some things I've been seeing around AO3 and Tumblr, I updated the SquidgeWorld Terms of Service. The Terms of Service are here: https://www.squidgeworld.org/tos

The text of the additions is here:

NEW - Added July 7th, 2021: Users will not add any link, in their profiles or in their profiles or in any posted work or comment that points to a fundraiser of any kind including, but not limited to, Patreon, Ko-Fi, or the like. The only exception to this is in the case of a piece of work that is of original work, meaning the fandom used is Original Work, and no other fandom is listed. The work must have original characters at all, and must not utilize any aspect of a fandom such as characters or relationships that stray from the "Original" characters and relationships listed in the child tags to the Original Work tag. You may, however, link to an off-site (non Squidge.org property) profile such as your Tumblr profile or such, and that site may link to whatever you'd like. Fanfiction and other fan works are guaranteed under the "Fair Use" clause, and are protected as long as the person posting it makes no money off of the work. People linking to Patreon or such and making money off of fanworks submit the SquidgeWorld Archive into legal jeopardy.

I've been thinking about abandoned and lost archives quite a bit today.  As a friend pointed out, the Stargate fandom has lost not only WraithBait, but Area 52 as well.  And as each day passes, we lose more and more fandom spaces.

Let's change that!

If you have or know of an at-risk archive, or maybe an archive that you're not wanting to manage anymore, let me know.  We've got resources available and can re-home just about anything as long as we can get to it.  We're here to preserve fandom - so let's get at it!

Reposting from the SquidgeWorld news post - thoughts?

So while we've been up for almost five months, things aren't quite as busy as they were over on Peja's Wonderful World of Makebelieve - at least back in the day. Way back in 2011, Peja and I put together a contest that ran monthly, and I'm thinking about starting it up again. What do you think?

The original contest information is here: https://www.squidge.org/peja/cgi-bin/contest.php

And if you're interested, here's how it would work:
1) On the first of the month, a script would run. It would pull:
    a. One random story that was posted the previous month
    b. One random comment (not a kudos, but an actual comment)
2) Entrants are vetted for validity. Validity just means it's an actual story and not some spam story/comment.
3) Vetted winners would be notified via the email address on their profile, as well as posted to a news story here.
4) Winners have up until the first of the following month to claim their prize.
5) Prizes are a $10 gift certificate to Amazon, Apple, or (possibly) Google Play if interest is there.

Winners would be:
One person whose story was posted the previous month
One person who made a comment the previous month
The author of the story where the comment was made

Thoughts?  You can post them here or over on the SquidgeWorld news post.

Posted over in [community profile] fandomcalendar just now:

Greetings!

SquidgeWorld Archive, formerly Peja's Wonderful World of Makebelieve, is running a challenge prompt for the first quarter of 2021. Between now and January 31st, people are invited to leave a series of prompts for others (or themselves, I'm not the boss of you!) to fill. Prompts include leaving a number of fandoms, characters, relationships, and tags. Once your prompt has been left, someone can come in and claim it, and they have until March 31st, 2021 to fill it.  This is a multifandom prompting fest; all are welcome.  I'm doing this to broaden SquidgeWorld's users, if people are interested.

Link to the challenge: https://squidgeworld.org/collections/jan_2021_prompt_fest

If you don't have a SquidgeWorld Archive account, you can sign up for one here: https://squidgeworld.org/signup
As you can see, SquidgeWorld is using the same software that runs the AO3. Just that it's run by me.

Key dates:
This is the prompt meme challenge for January 2021.
People who are leaving prompts must sign up and leave prompts by January 31st, 2021 11:59pm Pacific
People who are filling prompts must fill the prompt with a story of a minimum 500 words by March 31st, 2021
All stories go live as soon as they are fulfilled.
Stories not completed by March 31st, 2021, can be submitted to SqWA, but may not be added to the collection. Okay, they will be, but please try and fulfill by the date requested!

There is a FAQ included in the signup link above.  And if you need guidance/help on how to make a request, there is a video tutorial here: How can I use Collections/Prompt Meme?  NOTE: Since AO3 and SqWA use the same software, these instructions are interchangeable between sites.

Based on some discussions with another person about tagging, I thought I'd bring a question to those folks who are interested.  This will be posted as both a blogpost on SquidgeWorld, as well as a blogpost over at SquidgeStatus's Dreamwidth account.

Alternate Universe.  There's a tag that brings up all kinds of responses.  I mean, who doesn't like an amazing coffee shop AU, or maybe Steve McGarrett is a Sentinel and Danny Williams is a guide?  It brings up all sorts of possibilities.

But it gives me a bit of a headache as well.  And that's why I would like some input.

In Peja's Wonderful World of Makebelieve (WWOMB), which of course is now SquidgeWorld Archive (SqWA), we had many different AU type tags.  There's the easy ones that are true equivalents - so "Alternate universe" and "AU" mean exactly the same, so I kept "Alternate Universe" and made "AU" an equivalent.  But there are others that I had a hard time with.  Are they generic enough to make equivalent of Alternate Universe, or should they be standalone?  And that's where you come in.

Below is a list of every current AU tag in SqWA, and either "standalone" or "equivalent of X".  I made these choices on my own, but I can already see changing some.  But I need another brain, because goodness knows I'm not using mine 100% these days.  So if you would be so kind as to look over these and if any make you feel one way or another (especially if it contradicts what I've already chosen), please yell at me so I can change it.

Basically, if you see something that says "equivalent to X" but you feel like it should be a tag in its own right, then tell me. Like I can totally see why "Alternate Universe" and "AU - Sentinel/Guide" are completely different.  Keeping them as two separate tags lets you filter out "Alternate Universe" while keeping "AU - Sentinel/Guide".  But should "AU - Rentboy" be a standalone as it is, or get changed to a duplicate of Alternate Universe?

---

Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence: equivalent to Alternate Universe
Alternate Universe - Dark: equivalent to Alternate Universe
Alternate Universe - Time Travel: equivalent to "Time Travel" tag.
Alternate Universe:  standalone and parent to other tags
AU - Arthurian Fantasy: equivalent to Alternate Universe
AU - ATF: equivalent to Alternate Universe. NOTE: ATF = Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms, so profession AU
AU - Canon Divergent: equivalent to Alternate Universe
AU - Centaurs: standalone
AU - Children: standalone
AU - Fantasy: standalone
AU - First Meeting: equivalent to "First Meeting" tag
AU - Fusion: equivalent to "fusion" tag

AU - Human: standalone
AU - Humanoid Animals: standalone
AU - Immortality: equivalent to "immortality" tag
AU - Magic: standalone
AU - Mpreg: equivalent to "mpreg" tag
AU - Not Dead: standalone
AU - Occupation: equivalent to Alternate Universe
AU - Out Of Time: equivalent to Alternate Universe
AU - Rentboy: standalone

So if you're brand new to the software behind SquidgeWorld and AO3, then this post is for you!

I've created a bunch of video tutorials on just about everything you need to know about SquidgeWorld.org over in the FAQ.  If you're interested, they're over at this link.  All tutorials are done, the list is below.
And yes, you hear me talking to the dog and Boo during some of the videos. :)
