FYI Squidge.org and SquidgeWorld.org maintenance (usually scheduled for 30 minutes on Sunday mornings at 7am Pacific) will take a little longer this morning as there is hardware and software maintenance.

Questions? Drop me a note on here or on Twitter.

We lost an SSD, and the disk clone didn't take.  I fought with a process called "elasticsearch" for the last 20 hours, and gave up to reinstall again.  Now there's other Ruby errors.

We're still in a hard downtime for SquidgeWorld.  I have no ETA.

Routine maintenance this morning didn't go well for SquidgeWorld, so I'm replacing a disk drive that runs the base OS.  No ETA, but I will post when SquidgeWorld is back up!

Looks like I lost an SSD on SquidgeWorld, so I'm trying to get things back up again on a new disk. No ETA.

edit: We are back after a couple of hours.

Hardware issue just reared its head. Working on it!

Update: After 2.25 hours, we are back up!  We had a hardware failure, and the server we're on has been replaced. The system may be a bit slower than previous as this server is not as powerful, but at least we're up.

Planned downtime for SquidgeWorld.org tomorrow July 18th from 07:00 to 07:30 Pacific time (14:00 to 14:30 UTC) for routine maintenance.

still down

A huge tree took out everything in out once in a century storm here in Oregon. Lots of damage. We were even trapped because we live on a one way street and three trees (including the one that took out power, internet, etc) crashed over the road blocking us in, but managed to get out last night. Probably mid to late next week before everything is restored.

I'm taking SquidgeWorld down for a short period to fix an issue. We'll be down from Sunday 7am Pacific to about 7:30am Pacific.

There will be a short (15 minute) downtime on Friday 6/12 at 8am Pacific.  All services will be interrupted, but come back online soon thereafter.

Current status is that everything is back up, with the exception of our video/MP3 hosting. The database backups that I have - all 50 of them - seem to be corrupted.  I'm trying to locate the last good copy so that WWOMBTube can be restored.

IRC: Up
Mailing List Server: Up
Webserver: Up
Image Hosting: Up
Database server: Up
WWOMBTube: Down until further notice

FYI, I’m having ISP issues, but they are replacing the equipment. We will be down for about an hour.

Upgrading

Going to be doing some upgrading to the database server, so you'll see services go in and out today.  Shouldn't be more than a few hours.

On December 21st, sometime during the day (they have not given me a time), service to Squidge.org may be interrupted.  Our fiber internet connection is being upgraded to three times the current speed.  Hopefully it goes smoothly, but who knows.  Gotta plan for every eventuality.

Once the upgrade is complete, I'll anounce a new image hosting service that's been put in place for fandom.  If you want a sneak peek, you can head over to http://images.squidge.org and check it out.

Questions?

There will be a short downtime around 4:30pm Pacific Time today (in about an hour) for the installation of some hardware.  Shouldn't be more than 30 minutes or so.

We are having power issues in the Portland metro region, so we are in a (hopefully short) downtime.  ETA is 4pm Pacific.

We are back up...for now!

Finally able to get us back online. Things will take a few hours to shake out, like lost email, etc. But we should be caught up soon.

We'll have another downtime either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday. It won't be as long ::knock wood:: but it's putting more preventative measures in place.

Thanks for your patience, folks!

Update:

Power issues are something we deal with on a regular basis, and come back from relatively quickly. Only issue with today's power issue is that it seems to have fried our firewall. There's not much we can do, because we need to minimize running unprotected. I hope to have things in place by late tomorrow (Thursday). My apologies, folks.

Here's what's going on.

Our server farm is located in our home, specifically in a loft in the detached garage.  As it's a separate building, it has its own power, which is fed from a powerline from the house.

This winter has been more brutal than most, and the powerline to the garage (which is original to the dwelling) has frayed with the influx of ice.  This fraying has caused the line to short out.  This is why the power is out, and Squidge.org is down.

An electrician was able to come out last night on an emergency call (electricians are about 30 days out where we are, due to weather).  He diagnosed the issue, and said that he was going to have to replace the line between the house and the garage.  He was going to expedite it; someone is supposed to come out today - but that doesn't necessarily mean that the job will be completed today.  I'm hoping it will be, but I'm not holding my breath.

More updates as I get them.  Think good thoughts for them to complete the work today and that we can come up later on - hopefully that will happen.

We are getting a speed upgrade today, so we will be going down soon (~10am) until they bring us back online - about an hour.

We're going to have a short downtime at 4pm Pacific for network maintenance.
