Okay, everything is back up on Squidge.org including web surfing, with the exception of two sites. During the short downtime, the database server went down and would not come back up. I am going to be working on that server, but right now I can't guarantee it will be back up before Thursday night.

Right now the following sites are down:
http://www.squidge.org/~peja/cgi-bin/index.php - The Wonderful World of Makebelieve
http://www.squidge.org/ncis and http://www.ncisfiction.com - NCIS Fiction

Other than that, all other websites, all IRC, all mailing lists, and all email are up and functioning properly.

Here are the details:

During a routine bit of system maintenance on squidgedb.squidge.org (the new Squidge.org mysql database server), a software package that the Fedora Linux downloaded triggered a reboot (a new kernel). The reboot hung halfway, and would not come back up. Numerous interventions went into play, but nothing is working. I had to bring everything back up, with the exception of the two sites above that have their databases hosted on squidgedb (all other mysql based sites on squidge.org are hosted directly on squidge.org, along with the webserver).

Currently, all databases and user files are backed up nightly to an external USB disk hosted on that system. Convenient, but not if the server is down. What I will be doing in the next couple of weeks is installing a new NAS (network attached storage) and dump the backups to. That way, if this troublesome database server goes down again, I get the backups off of the network, and set the database up on another server. That way downtime is limited to like 1 hour instead of longer.

Please let me know if you have questions.
