Relationship Tagging Changes

This was previously posted on SquidgeWorld.org, and applies solely to SquidgeWorld. Please know that people should continue to tag the way that they wish; however the following is what taggers will be using as part of guidelines.

Original post from here: https://www.squidgeworld.org/admin_posts/95/

First off, if you've created new tags in the Archive - THANK YOU! And secondly, please note that this is a guide/suggestion only. People can, will, and should continue to use the Archive the way that they want to without undue burden.

I wanted to do a small post about relationship tags. As many people know, relationship tags are pretty much just the characters involved plus the fandom(s) attached to. However, we're taking a different tack with how relationship tags work within SquidgeWorld Archive, and you're part of that journey.

Everyone knows that a tag that's "Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes" is going to be a romantic tag for those two characters. This is usually fine, but when you're wanting to read a fic that's primarily for those two characters, sometimes you have to wade through other stories because your favorite relationship tag has been thrown in as a background character or such. Or maybe you're expecting a relationship, when the story ends with them figuring out they like each other - more of a "Pre" type relationship. Well that's where SquidgeWorld's relationship tags are different. And, with your help, will continue to grow.

There will be four different types of relationships, all dealt with in the Relationship-type tag.

  • The main relationship - e.g. a primary relationship like the example, "Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes"

  • A "pre" relationship. This is where someone tags a story where Steve and Bucky are going to get together, but it's just not in this story

  • A "background" relationship. This is where Steve and Bucky are in a relationship, but it's secondary to another pairing. Or maybe it's a Gen story, but Steve and Bucky are an item - just not the focus of the story.

  • A "past" relationship. This is where Steve and Bucky were in a relationship at one time, but have since broken up

If you click on the main "Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes" tag, you'll be able to see all of the stories - main, pre, background, and past. But if you only wanted to read a story where they're in the background, you would click on the "background Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes" and be presented only with those particular stories. Doing this will enable people to search for and find the stories they truly want to read, and sort out the ones that they otherwise might not read.

In order to do this, we'll need your help if you choose to do so; otherwise, please disregard.

  • First off, stop using the "Freeform" tags to indicate pre, background, or past type relationships. Any "Freeform" tags that currently exist will be converted to relationship tags and stacked underneath the main relationship tag.

  • To indicate a pre relationship, please use the prefix "pre" - all lower case, no punctuation, e.g. "pre Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes"

  • To indicate a background relationship, please use the prefix "background" - not "bkgd" or such. Just "background", e.g. "background Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes".  Additionally, please use "background" instead of using "minor" or similar terms.

  • To indicate a past relationship, please use the prefix "past" - all lower case, no punctuation, e.g. "past Steve Rogers/James 'Bucky' Barnes"

  • While these types of relationships don't lend themselves as well to QPR ( ~ ) or Friendship ( & ) relationships, they can still be used as such. So maybe The Doctor and Captain Jack Harkness were formerly in a QPR, you could use "past The Doctor ~ Jack Harkness". Or maybe you're writing a "Friends to enemies" stories, you could use the tag "past Blair Sandburg & Simon Banks".

And above all, if you have questions, please let us know!

Sunday 9/17 Maintenance

Please be aware that our usual maintenance will go much longer than expected. We are normally down every Sunday from 7am Pacific to 7:30am Pacific. However, tomorrow we will be consolidating database servers for both Squidge Images as well as SquidgeWorld which will take up to 2 hours.  As such, regular Sunday maintenance will be from 7am until around 9am Pacific. Hopefully sooner, and definitely hopefully not later.  Regular webhosting and mailing lists will be available, but Squidge Image Hosting and SquidgeWorld will be unavailable until after maintenance

Questions? Ping us!

Today's Maintenance

FYI Squidge.org and SquidgeWorld.org maintenance (usually scheduled for 30 minutes on Sunday mornings at 7am Pacific) will take a little longer this morning as there is hardware and software maintenance.

Questions? Drop me a note on here or on Twitter.

Back!

Due to the storms here in the Pacific Northwest, and the unexpected 6" of snow that we got that took out a bunch of trees, we lost power about 10 hours ago.  Just came back, and all services are coming back up.

Interesting SquidgeWorld Stat

So on New Year's Eve 2021, I did a kind of "year in review" for what people who were logged in read in the SquidgeWorld Archive.  If you're interested, the data is here in a Twitter thread, and it covers fandoms, relationships, characters, and tags of every story that was read by a logged-in user for 2021.

Someone responded and asked what the overall archive was weighted when it came to tags, because in the "freeform" tags (those are the ones like "Established Couple" or "First TIme" that you add to your works when archiving them) Angst was amost 1,500 reads higher than the next highest tag, AU.  Well today I ran that query, and yes.  SquidgeWorld is definitely weighted to be angsty!

I love data, so when my love of fandom collides with my love of data I've definitely got a smile on my face.

Jinjurly Audio Archive

So Squidge has hosted the Jinjurly audio/podfic archive for a couple of years now, but have only recently taken control of the day-to-day stuff tha needs to be done.  And if you know anything about the Jinjurly archive, you might know that it was hacked a while back, which resulted in the loss of many, many podfics.

Between [personal profile] mific  and myself ([personal profile] squidgiepdx ) we have recovered a number of files for the archive.  These are mostly SGA, but those do make up a significant part of the archive itself.  We've also been revamping things here and there.

Two big things to note: First, if you want to submit something to the archive there is a new form (click here) to submit items!  It'll be embedded in the site soon.

Second thing, if you need to reach us, you can email jinjurlymods@squidge.org and one of us will get back to you.

Please note: Because so many files are missing, we're going to ask the community to see if they have replacements.  That will be forthcoming in the next while (could be days, could be weeks).

Image Hosting Updates

Two updates for Image hosting at Squidge.org

First of all, there's going to be a downtime starting around 10:30am Pacific time (about 15 minutes from this post) for some maintenance.

Second, people will now be required to create accounts on images.squidge.org in order to upload pictures. This is due to adult image spammers trying to scam bandwidth from Squidge.org.  Yes, you're allowed to put fan based NSFW images on https://images.squidge.org - but adult dating/scam/spamming is definitely not allowed.

Abandoned Archives

I've been thinking about abandoned and lost archives quite a bit today.  As a friend pointed out, the Stargate fandom has lost not only WraithBait, but Area 52 as well.  And as each day passes, we lose more and more fandom spaces.

Let's change that!

If you have or know of an at-risk archive, or maybe an archive that you're not wanting to manage anymore, let me know.  We've got resources available and can re-home just about anything as long as we can get to it.  We're here to preserve fandom - so let's get at it!

Coming soon: A New Server!

So our existing server has done really well for us for the last few years, but it's time to get off of the old operating system (Centos 6.10) and do some OS and infrastructure upgrades.  As such, the last piece of tech that I needed (a replacement 4Tb hybrid drive) will be here in a few days.  Once that's here, I'll start the migration from existing server to the new server.

If you were around for this last time, it's a process that'll take a day or two.  I don't have an ETA on when the process will start, but it'll probably be in the next two weeks.  And once it starts, it'll take probably a full day of downtime before everything is configured.

This applies to Squidge.org and any virtual domains on that machine.  The hosting of Images.Squidge.ORG server and SquidgeWorld.ORG will not be affected.

Ping me if you have questions!

Update: Back Online!

After some amazing work by our local ISP and our amazing, overworked linemen, the power and Internet have been restored!  We are all back up and running!  If you see anything odd, please let me know.

I wanted to say something.  A while back (years ago) when we had a 24 hour downtime, I got cussed out by someone who was inconvenienced.  That's okay - that's their story, that's their life, and they were entitled to their opinions.  The last few outages we've had - and for 2021, it's not been that great so far (4 outages total, between 12 hours and 7 days each) people have been supportive, and I really, really appreciate that.

See, the thing about doing this - running Squidge.org, SquidgeWorld.org, and various other offerings to non-profits (yes, Squidge hosts about a dozen non-profit organizations, from deaf ministries to women's shelters) is something I do out of my own pocket.  I've asked for money once, for a domain that got hijacked and we had to purchase it back, but otherwise nothing.  Thing is, I can do this as long as I can host things in my own environment - our mini datacenter in our garage, etc.  I couldn't afford to do this if we were colocated in a datacenter somewhere, or even had multiple virtual machines - not without constantly having to come to people and ask for money.  That, or start charging people for using Squidge services.  And I do not want to do any of that.

So no matter how the outage affected you - angrily or sad or whatever, I do apologize.  But my cup half full version says it's better to let Squidge be Squidge with the possibility of downtimes due to once in a century storms, etc, rather than have to have no Squidge at all.

Be well and stay safe!

another outage

We were down from about 23:45 Friday night until about 06:00 Sunday morning due to winter storms taking out powerlines here in the Pacific Northwest.  I tried to get a message out on here and Twitter, but only my tweet made it through (so follow SquidgeORG on Twitter if you can!). We live in a valley between two large hills, so cell signal isn't all that great here.

Update

I think just about everything should be good now.  Please let me know if you see any bumps.

Only thing outstanding is the firewall DNS name resolution. I updated the IP address, so if you're not on a public DNS server (like OpenDNS or Google) it may take up to a few hours to propagate.

WWOMBTube restored

I was able to get a copy of the WWOMBTube database files, and it is now restored. Data restored was from May 24th at 8am, so if you input videos/comments/data after May 24th at 8am Pacific time, it was not restored.

Status

Current status is that everything is back up, with the exception of our video/MP3 hosting. The database backups that I have - all 50 of them - seem to be corrupted.  I'm trying to locate the last good copy so that WWOMBTube can be restored.
